Tameshigiri Stand Complete

I finished the cutting stand today (except for the dowel pegs). Here are some pics:

I think it came out pretty well. Hopefully next week I will be putting it to work. I plan to take video and put them up on youtube, so be on the lookout.

Boku Sensei Phase 2

I have already caught a lot of crap for using a hacksaw on the 2x4 and 4x4... especially after Sean pointed out home depot would have made the cuts for free if I would have just asked someone. But that would have involved me hunting down an associate and trying to explain to him where I needed the cuts. Besides, hacksawing is good training, even if I went through two hack saw blades on the 4x4 (by the way, those things kind of explode when the break, I guess because of the tension on the saw). Now you all are probably seeing why I suck at most do-it-yourself type projects.

Anyway, I stained the cutting stand and I think it turned out pretty well. There are a few spots where stain dripped and I didn't clean off fast enough, but it isn't that noticeable. Here are the results:

All that is left now is just to make some pegs and buy some wara! I am looking for tatami beach mats as a quick fix so I can cut without having to order wara from tameshigiri.com yet. If any of you know where to get beach mats, let me know.

Edit: I will probably put the kanji on in a couple of days and show you all the final stand.

Boku Sensei Phase 1

I bought the lumber today to start on my first tameshigiri stand. Bushey Sensei picked out the perfect name: boku sensei (æœšć…ˆç”Ÿ) which means wooden sensei. I decided to go for a simpler cutting stand without the interlocking legs... mainly because I do not have the tools or skills to do it at this time. Here are the pictures of my progress:

Just a note for anyone who wants to build a cutting stand. It is probably a good idea to get a jigsaw or a table saw to cut the wood. I spent over two hours today cutting down the 2x4 legs and the 4x4 base with a hacksaw... yes a hacksaw. It seriously feels like I have done Sekiguchi Sensei's torture exercises all day.

I will drill the dowel rod hole tomorrow and hopefully stain the entire stand ebony. Look forward for more pics tomorrow.
