Well I am going to try my hand at making my own cutting stand. So far everything I have attempted in the way of carpentry (carpentrydo?) has been disastrous (well, there was one time I was okay with a dremel, but Gary was supervising me). I have a plan in my mind and it is a slight modification of the tameshigiri.com cutting stand.
The stand needs to be portable since the future dojo will be sub-leased space until I can find my own space in Austin. I am thinking instead of screwing in the legs, trying to make the legs interlock with out screws so I can take them apart when we are finished test cutting and fit the stand into my car. It should be similar to this bed in how the legs of the cutting stand will interlock (but reversed so the legs go into the bottom of the stand and not into the top).
I am undecided on the kanji to put on the stand. Right now it is a toss up between iaijutsu (居合術), bujutsu (武術), or isshin (一心). Feel free to comment and let me know which kanji you think I should use. We'll see how it turns out.
I think you should name the stand "Boku Sensei" as jyukucho tells us that the wara and stand are our teachers during cutting and we should treat them with respect due a teacher. Remember the story of the guy in sensei's dojo who moved the wara with his feet by kicking it away after cutting??? Sensei invited him to leave forever for this disrespect of the wara. Just my thoughts.
Sekiguchi Bushi
I think that wooden sensei would be a great name. I may need to ask Denison Sensei, but do you know if this is the correct kanji for boku: 木
Thanks!
